SUMMARY:Evening Art Courses at Rowan
DESCRIPTION:At Rowan we are now running two evenings a week of evening classes. Every Monday and Thursday\, 6.30pm to 9pm\, starting from Monday 28th September. Rowan’s art courses offer something refreshingly different from other adult classes in Cambridge. Participants consistently describe a “relaxed and supportive atmosphere”\, where learning feels enjoyable as well as focused. \nCourses run in small groups of no more than eight people\, allowing tutors to give clear guidance and individual support. As one participant put it:\n“Relaxed atmosphere\, lovely clear instructions and a super helpful tutor.” \nYou’ll work in our fully equipped arts centre\, with all materials provided and access to high-quality specialist facilities\, including pottery kilns\, pug mills and professional printmaking presses.\n“The pottery room is so well equipped\,” and “Excellent facilities\, good lighting\, warm and welcoming.” \nEvenings at Rowan are lively and social. Several courses run at the same time\, creating a shared studio feel. Each session includes a short break with complimentary tea\, coffee and biscuits\, giving you the chance to meet other artists and see what’s being made across the building. \nAbove all\, our courses are designed to be enjoyable and confidence-building:\n“Really good fun\,”\n“Classes were fun\, exploring different techniques — I have learnt so much!” \nMany participants go on to book again and would recommend Rowan art courses to others:\n“I’ve really enjoyed this class\, and am considering doing another! SUMMARY:Syd Barrett: 80th Birthday Celebration Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This year marks what would have been Roger “Syd” Barrett’s 80th birthday.  \nOpenspace will host an exhibition featuring original paintings and sketches along with prints of larger works by the brilliant\, creative force who co-founded Pink Floyd and shaped the psychedelic rock scene. \nThe exhibition will also include work by contemporary artists honouring Syd’s life\, including his nephew Ian Barrett\, Mark Wilkinson\, Spadge Hopkins\, Mikey Georgeson\, Rob Martin\, and James Wilkinson. \nThis exhibition coincides with a celebration concert featuring Kula Shaker\, Soft Machine and many others on Saturday October 10th at Cambridge Corn Exchange. \nAlso a special album of cover versions called ‘Clowns And Jugglers’ will be released on October 9th offering fresh interpretations of some of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd’s most iconic songs. \nAt 7.30pm on Friday 9th October there’ll be a talk by Rob Chapman\, writer of Syd Barrett: A Very Irregular Head\, widely considered to be the definitive biography of Syd Barrett. \nOpening Times:\nSaturday 3rd 10am – 5pm;\nSunday 4th 10am – 3pm;\nTuesday 6th – Sunday 11th 10am – 5pm

SUMMARY:The Colours Between – Julia Ball. Exhition at Openspace & Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:This show at Openspace is a rare chance to see a selection of Julia Ball’s large paintings borrowed from private collections. These will be shown alongside supporting study material exploring Julia’s process towards the finished work. \nThe poet Wendy Mulford described Julia Ball’s painting as “the visual equivalence of meditation.” Her subtly colored\, light-filled pictures have a transcendent quality that induces a state of calm. \nJulia Ball (1930–2025) was an influential abstract artist well loved in Cambridge. Her painting style distilled the landscapes of East Anglia into pure\, luminous fields of colour. \nShe would spend hours meticulously observing a single outdoor spot until the physical structures faded away\, leaving only pure\, light-filled color fields. Instead of literal scenes\, she captured the essence of light and space. \nThis show coincides with another exhibition of stunning new discoveries from Julia’s remaining collection at The Old Fire Engine House Gallery\, Ely (Friday 16th October 6pm – 8pm to Sunday 15th November 2026) where Julia exhibited for many years. \nBook Launch : The Colours Between – The Life and Work of Julia Ball 1930 – 2025. \nA new book edited by Liz Rothschild featuring contributions from notable figures from Cambridge art\, poetry\, and academic scenes including Wendy Mulford\, Elspeth Owen\, Denise Riley\, Amy Tobin\, Harriet Tarlo\, and Harriet Lofler\, will be launched at the show. \nOn 18th October 3-4 pm there’ll be a ticketed book launch event at Openspace for please check camopen.space or juliaball.org websites for details. Places will be limited. \nAn arresting publication drawing on Julia’s early work\, sketchbooks\, teaching materials and journals and describing her life as an artist\, art teacher\, activist and creative collaborator.  A rich array of images catalogues her development from art school into printmaking and towards her final hugely ambitious large canvases and the many photographs document her home and studio\, portraits of her and her family and many projects with which she was engaged.

DESCRIPTION:A seven week course of watercolour classes for adult beginners and improvers.\nEach week I provide a project\, a live painting demonstration and a step-by-step illustrated guide to the painting project. During a demonstration\, I will show you various techniques and methods for creating different effects with watercolours and tips for using different brushes\, paints\, and paper.  The demonstration is also available on a large television screen so you can see all of the detail in the painting process.\nEach term I provide an illustrated step by step book of the projects with reference photos. SUMMARY:Experimental Watercolour Creative mark making using aqua paste\, granulation medium and liquid charcoal in landscape painting.
DESCRIPTION:Come along for a creative and relaxing day experimenting with watercolour and different mediums to create textural effects. Create beautiful textures with aqua paste\, granulation medium and liquid charcoal. I will give group and individual demonstrations of the painting techniques. I will also provide notes explaining the techniques used during the workshop. The workshop will start at 10am and we finish at 4pm.  All courses are for adults age 18 plus.    The workshop will be held in the large light and airy Wilkinson room at St John’s Church\, Hills Road\, Cambridge. There is free parking at the rear of the Church.
