Beginners Watercolour Painting Workshop

22nd February, 2025 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

A relaxing comprehensive workshop exploring the basic techniques of pure watercolour. No previous experience necessary, complete beginners and those wanting to refresh their techniques are welcome.

We start the day with a brief introduction to materials and I will demonstrate washes, layering, and explain transparency and opacity. I will also do a step by step demonstration of a finished painting which you will be able to paint. I explain my process and show you various techniques and methods for creating different effects with watercolours. There is an overhead camera that records the demonstration to a large television screen so that everyone can easily see the painting process in close up. One of the great things about attending a demonstration is that you can see the techniques being used in real-time and ask questions during the demonstration.
My workshops include demonstrations but are hands-on, allowing participants to practice their skills with guidance and personalised feedback. There will be plenty of opportunity for you to practice washes and the techniques and use them in a finished painting.

The beginners starter pack to take home includes: 12 tubes of paint and a professionally printed course book covering the aspects of materials, tone, layering, washes and colour palette projects for you to paint at home. All material you will need are provided for the day but brushes and palettes need to be returned at the end of the day.

Demonstrations will start at 10am and we finish at 4pm. I encourage attendees to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the commencement of the workshop ie 9.45am. This will allow you time to familiarise yourself with the amenities. Meet me and your fellow participants and enjoy a coffee or tea or other light refreshments.

All courses are for adults age 18.

You will need to bring an old shirt or apron and your lunch.

Local shops a short 5min walk from the venue (Costa, Co-op etc). Free tea, coffee and biscuits (including gluten free) will be available all day.

The workshop will be held in the large light and airy Wilkinson room at St John’s Church, Hills Road, Cambridge. There is free parking at the rear of the Church which is accessible from Blinco Grove. The Church is a 15min walk from the railway station.

“Denise is a very experienced artist and tutor. She is also very friendly and accommodating. I love coming to her workshops as they suit my learning style. The workshops are very well organised and structured with Denise always explaining the activity in great detail and answering all questions. She models the relevant techniques and step by step instructions how to achieve the painting/ paintings. Denise is always very well prepared for the sessions. The booklets produced for them are high quality and the big screen on a wall behind her makes it much easier for everyone to see what she’s doing. I will certainly put myself on another one.” Gabriela
