Artist's StatementI studied for a degree in Fine Art Painting at Norwich School of Art, graduating in 2009. I began painting ‘en plein air’ (in the open air) at the end of 2017 and now primarily produce work this way, in a contemporary impressionistic style, using oils.
I am inspired by my surroundings and strive to capture the essence of the moment I’m witnessing in a place, at different times of day and through the changing seasons, often completing the paintings in one session. I love the thrill of painting out on location- the excitement of the light, changing skies, people coming and going, and trying to put down in paint an atmosphere of a scene, in a very limited period of time. I favour oils for the creamy texture, rich colours and variety of marks that can be made, from washes and thinly scraped back brushstrokes, to fluid and thick impasto textures. I will sometimes produce larger paintings in my studio using oil sketches or drawings which were done on location.
I live and paint in and around Cambridge and the Fens, but also very much enjoy painting at the coast and other rural locations in East Anglia, and sometimes further afield.
As well as painting, I work part time at the Fitzwilliam Museum and Primavera Gallery in Cambridge, both of which inspire and feed into my artistic practice.
I have been selected to exhibit with The Royal Institute of Oil Painters and The Royal Society of British Artists at Mall Galleries in London, The Munnings Museum in Dedham, and have won prizes for painting at Plein Air Competition ‘Paint Out’ in Norfolk and Cambridge in 2018, 2019, and 2021. I was commissioned to paint the David Parr House and Clare College in Cambridge during 2022.
