Artist's StatementSachiko Purser’s work is inspired by nature, narratives and nostalgia. It explores the imprint of the current environment on the natural world.
She explores art through a wide range of mediums, including printmaking, Sumi-ink painting, watercolour, and pastel, as well as acrylic painting in her more recent works.
Her series of work Endangered Species seeks to raise awareness of the wave of extinction in the natural world by creating images of vanishing animals, communicating important environmental issues to the viewer.
Sachiko graduated from Cambridge School of Art in 2012 with a BA in Illustration. She went on to obtain an MA in Children’s Book Illustration in 2015, and an MA in printmaking in 2022.
She is passionate about nature and the environment, especially the welfare of animals. She blends traditional Japanese techniques such as Sumi-ink painting and Japanese woodblock with a modern perspective on printmaking and digital technology to create a mix cultural and organic-technological hybrids.
Photopolymer etchings were created by original Sumi-ink paintings of the animals, combined with background images that matched their living environment, then resizing the images to fit Photopolymer etching plate sizes before printing.
Her project ‘Endangered Species’ was: shortlisted for the Discerning Eye Exhibition 2025; shortlisted for the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation’s Wildlife Artist of the Year 2022; and long-listed for the World Illustration Awards.
