Artist's StatementI have a varied portfolio, having explored a wide range of subjects reflecting the human figure, the countryside, sky, sea and natural history involving a variety of techniques and mediums. Much of my work over the years focused on painting with oil and/or acrylic on canvas and I have a long experience in life drawing which has provided material for paintings outside of the life studio. However, in a quite different way, I have experimented with techniques that incorporate natural materials collected from places - usually beaches - that I have visited. By combining acrylic medium with eroded shell, stone and sand I form 'tablets' of the material distributed in arrays that evoke a sense of order, contrasting with the underlying trajectory for disorder manifested as erosion. Part of the idea of the tablets is that they preserve a fraction of a location as a component of memory using the actual material of the place.I am a largely self-taught artist, but have received tuition in life drawing & painting at Kent Institute of Art & Design (now University College for the Creative Arts) at Canterbury. I have held solo exhibitions in local galleries (Horsebridge, Whitstable, 2006 and Ebonytwist, Folkestone, 2007) and have participated in the Canterbury Festival Art Fairs. I am now resident in Cambridge where I continue to study life drawing alongside making landscape images, abstracts and tablets.
