Artist's StatementPaintings of cultural memory and place.

I love the ambiguity and multiplicity of meaning represented in early Irish monastic stone carving and illuminated manuscripts. In Co Donegal and Co Derry, where I was brought up, ancient stone crosses lived amongst cows in fields looking out to sea - completely uncelebrated.

What was the relationship between the book, the staff, the sea, the horse, the priest, the sword; when they were first made, when I was a child in the troubles and now?
In lockdown I could revisit these places again remotely. I started to make my own narrative abstract paintings in ink, collage and acrylic. Exploring the themes and colours of place.
