Artist's StatementSwedish floor mats woven from repurposed cotton fabric
in 2016 i purchased a kentish loom from a swedish friend who felt it was time for her to pass it on. she taught me how to make swedish rag rugs or trasmattor, the plural of trasmatta! my grandfather taught weaving in Galashiels in the Scotish borders and i had always wanted to sit at a loom and weave something. these mats are probably the most basic of constructions but i love the simplicity of creating something so useful, decorative and of unique character. some have bigger stories than others, but each has a name and a history. all the fabrics i use once had a life as something else.
my studio is a cabin in my garden in the village of Lode near Anglesey Abbey - I usually have a few mats in stock for sale and am happy to take commissions. i have a stock of fabrics for you to choose from or you can provide your own cotton fabrics to weave into a mat to match your need or maybe create a memory piece from something special. if you would like to come and look and maybe try making a mat for yourself please do get in touch.
