Artist's StatementMy paintings, drawings and books explore specific landscapes and stories that convey what is meaningful to me either for their historical or personal importance, serving as they always have, as a personal travel map. I have completed a graphic novel in the process of publication and am working on my second as well as other 2D visual projects, havinng exhibited my work for many yers between Spain, Aotearoa New Zealand and the UK.
Wandering Folk and Identity: Aotearoa New Zealand… without Borders: What does this mean to me? Well, I am a descendant of migrants, and a migrant myself. Over the years I have often found myself in the position of the visitor, the outsider, the other. I observe everyday life around me and interweave it into my stories.
I studied at Ilam School of Fine Art, Canterbury University, New Zealand. I was long-listed for the First Graphic Novel Awards UK 2023, runner up in the New Zealand Molly Morpeth Canaday Award (2005), finalist in the Norsewear Award (2007) again in New Zealand, finalist in the Focus Abengoa International Painting Prize, Spain (2014) and finalist in the Parkin Drawing Prize (2019) in New Zealand.
I love doing artists in schools projects and will continue writing my second work, continue to research and contribute to international cultural heritage projects as well as workshops for all ages around graphic storytelling in 2024.
