Artist's StatementI graduated from Leeds Beckett University with a BA in Fine Art, where I studied oil painting and printmaking. My interest in Buddhism and East Asian philosophy led me to explore Chinese painting. In the late 1980s I was fortunate to find a stimulating and encouraging teacher in Peter Cavaciuti. I am one of his first students and I have developed my skills through his tuition. I am a founder member of Song Lin Zhai, a group of like-minded painters who exhibit in Cambridge. Inspiration comes from my travels to Tibet, Italy and France and from my love of plants and still life, which have been of enduring interest from my student days. Colour, balance and a sense of tranquility are important elements in my work.

What is it that inspires me in East Asian painting? The change from oil to watercolour and ink on absorbent Asian papers was initially challenging, like learning a new visual language, but I now love the freedom and spontaneity of East Asian painting. I enjoy the clarity of form due to the practice of calligraphy which gives everything a sense of vitality, and the spontaneous effect of the brush moving over handmade absorbent papers. All these elements evoke a sense of pleasure and interest in being alive.
