Artist's StatementHello! My name is Cheryl Liston and I'm a fulltime self taught professional artist, originally specialising in watercolour since 2001 until 2019 when I decided to take on a new challenge of working with oils as well.
I have a particular love of painting the sea and all things coastal, there’s something so uplifting about the vastness of the skyline sitting over the ocean. I'm drawn to the beauty of the ever changing landscapes, sunrises, sunsets and moody skies, I capture these atmospheric elements in my paintings by embracing colour, light and tone and I enjoy creating paintings that have a sense of calm.
My painting style is contemporary and semi-abstract and the main body of my work is oil on canvas. I also work with oil and resin which I achieve by pouring resin over my finished work, using a heat gun to remove any air bubbles, leaving a smooth, shiny surface. This process can bring out more depth, texture and colour in the painting.
My watercolours have a similar painting style, keeping my work loose using a wet in wet process, which allows the colours to merge. Subtle details are then added using artist ink pens.
As a member of Cambridge Open Studios, Art in East Anglia and Visual Artist Association, I enjoy attending art fairs and exhibitions throughout East Anglia and love meeting fellow artists and art lovers.
A selection of my paintings is now available in Wells-Next-The-Sea at Metamorphosis, The Gallery, where I work once a week with fellow artists.
You can follow me and my work on Instagram, where I post my paintings as they develop and find out about the inspiration behind them. You can also subscribe to my website and I will send you updates of my latest works, events and special offers from time to time!Â

Vertical Abstract
Embracing my love of colour and the gorgeous rich buttery texture of oil paint, I love creating these uplifting vertical abstract paintings. Starting by blending vertical strips of colour, I then use my palette knife to apply large amounts of oil paint, gradually building up layers of colour and texture.
Seascapes
I love painting coastal scenes and strive to capture contemporary seascapes that capture a calming and relaxing atmosphere. I very rarely paint using photographs unless I am doing commission work as I love the freedom of choosing a colour palette and going with the flow!
Traditional Oil & Resin
Painted onto wood or MDF I love painting these amazing oils in the same way that I do with the larger canvas paintings. Once the oil is completely dry and cured I then add a layer of resin over the top to create a flawless glossy finish. this process although much more challenging, brings out more depth and colour and enhances the image. My local framer then makes bespoke float frames to finish these one off paibtings.
Watercolours
In the same semi abstract style as my oil paintings, I love paintings atmospheric watercolours. With the same mindset of using a limited colour palette and the freedom of creating from my imagination, these individual paintings have an individual atmospheric style.
Animals
As you can see, I love colour and I love creating these cute animal characters. Painting in oil I use a more playful colour palette to bring them to life and the result just brings a smile!
