Artist's StatementI work mainly with stoneware clay to produce hand built sculptures, vases and dishes.
Sculpted pieces have evolved from life models into more abstracted work, with the human form as a starting point and using the natural movement of clay to develop curves and edges. I love to capture a tender moment or a relaxed pose. More recently I’ve been exploring the resolution of abstracted forms to optimise the overall aesthetic effect.
The magic of the kiln in transforming the basic materials, clay, glazes, mineral oxides and so on, into something special never ceases to amaze. Together with smoke firing and other surface finishes, it seems pure alchemy.
