Artist's Statement.
My first career was as a historian, and I have always been fascinated by ancient objects - the connection to past lives that they represent, the meanings they embody, and the feelings they provoke. My art explores these ideas - of making, ageing, preciousness, fragility and repair. I’m also drawn to imaginary landscapes and structures - places that are liminal and ‘in-between’, that are both playful and a bit unsettling. I love Isamu Noguchi’s playgrounds, which he calls ‘primers of shapes and functions: simple, mysterious and evocative.’
I started out primarily as a sculptor, but have recently moved into making jewellery, as I have always enjoyed making small-scale, precise work.
I’m a material and technique magpie. I have worked with clay, metal, wood, glass, rubber, enamel, plastic and paint. I enjoy traditional making, but I’m also obsessed by machines and by industrial processes. My work tries to synthesise the two approaches: I often laser-cut using hand-drawn paths, and I have designed my own hand-driven CNC router.
In 2022 I was one of five artists featured in ‘Curve and Form’, an exhibition of sculptural ceramics at Pangolin London including Merete Rasmussen, Halima Cassel, Patricia Volk and Katharina Klug. In 2021, I was a ‘Fresh’ finalist for the British Ceramics Biennial in Stoke-on-Trent, a competition bringing ‘critical attention to artists from the UK and Ireland at a launch moment in their creative practice’. In 2019 I reached the finals of Handmade Britain’s ‘Identity’ competition, exhibiting in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. My work is held in a number of private collections.
