Artist's StatementMy semi-abstract contemporary landscapes are inspired by the British coast and wetlands. I paint big cloud filled skies over quiet glinting water on wide open beaches.

My love of clouds is visible in all my seascapes. My main focus of any piece is the sky. My close observation and understanding of it allows me to paint them convincingly in all their moods.

I often approach a painting by imposing a framework of rows or columns to work methodically across or down the canvas. This disjointed approach results in welcome accidental forms and shapes creating unifying connections across the canvas. I work towards this approach creating convincing cloudscapes over still glinting water.

This method of working satisfies my need to have a level of control over the chaotic creative process and my subject whilst allowing room for exploration and excitement within a structured way of working.

Biography

Melanie works from her studio aboard her narrowboat with views across the washes in Cambridgeshire. Originally from Cornwall, her life’s path gradually took her to the flat lands of the Fens and closer to her favourite coastline, the Norfolk coast. Melanie has a fine art degree from Chelsea School of Art and after a career in web design she now completely focuses on painting. Melanie’s work features in private collections and has been widely across the UK.
