Artist's StatementMy paintings are full of colour, detail and ideas and tell stories that are magical and slightly surreal. My home city of Cambridge has a strong influence and stimulates my interest in Medieval Art. During Open Studios 2023, I shall be at St Andrew's Church Hall, Chesterton CB41DH on July 1 & 2 and July 8 & 9 (weekends 1 & 2) and in my own studio on Milton Road on July 22 & 23 (weekends 4).
I have never contemplated a career other than art, although this was rather frowned upon when I was a child. I studied Visual Communication at Wolverhampton School of Art and armed with a degree started my career in the art industry as a graphic designer, illustrator, art shop and gallery manager and finally an art teacher.
Nowadays, I spend most of my time painting and giving art tuition at home in my studio. I also love sketching especially the beautiful buildings in Cambridge, sometimes with the local urban sketchers group - you may have seen me! During the lockdowns I drew a sketch a day which related to my life during the pandemic. I have since made these into books which are for sale during Open Studios.
I always head first for the older works in art museums to enjoy the paintings, tapestries and manuscripts from the medieval period, loving the gold leaf, the people, imaginary animals and the humour in the work of this period. I am a reader at the Parker Library at Corpus Christi in Cambridge. This has many medieval books with the most amazing illuminations. I have been drawing from these fabulous books and they provide a lot of the information and enhance the progression in my art.
I am represented by Byard Art in Cambridge: https://byardart.co.uk and Lux Gallery in Birmingham: https://luxgallery.co.uk. I am also part of Cambridge Drawing Society and my cards and prints can be found in several city shops.
I give tuition for all kind of media in my studio. To see samples of the work produced by my students or for more information visit: http://www.cambridgeartclasses.co.uk/

Urban Sketches
Drawing on location.
My paintings are intricate, detailed and organised and take around 3 months to complete. Alongside, I love drawing from life especially in my beautiful home town of Cambridge.
I draw with the Cambridge Urban Sketchers as often as I can and also co-founded a small group meeting every Wednesday afternoon, in the streets and parks when it is warm or in the museums and pubs when the wind is raging or the rain is falling. One of the things I love about Urban Sketching is being in the company of like minded people. We don't usually talk during the sketching process as all our concentration is focussed on what is before us and how we are going to depict this on paper. But afterwards, we treat ourselves to tea and sometimes a cake! Life can't get better!
Cambridge Paintings
I love Cambridge, it's old spires, narrow streets and busy people and I get lots of inspiration from walking around the beautiful city that I am lucky enough to live in. The old buildings and my love of medieval art leads to my intricate and often rather fanciful paintings. I hope you enjoy them. I also have prints and greeting cards of many of the paintings.
