Artist's StatementWhen human industry wrenches materials from the earth, nature eventually puts them back. This cycle of reclamation is deftly described in Carol Sinclair's exquisitely simple sculptures. Taking contrasting materials such as beach-combed driftwood or pebbles, and brutish metal or concrete, she fuses the elements into harmonious and contemplative objects of beauty. Carol Sinclair sources her raw materials from the detritus of commerce washed up on our shores in the form of rusty, bent machine components or coal industry waste, or tiny colourful pieces of wrecked fishing boats and perished rubber floats. She has frequented Northern coastal collieries, Welsh slate mines and Norfolk dunes in search of material which she then assembles at her studio in the water meadows beside the River Granta. The resulting sculptures can grace a small space in a tiny flat or she can accomplish large scale commissions to enhance a large garden. Carol Sinclair's work is shown and collected internationally.
