Artist's Statement
I received my fine art diploma from the Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting, Kensington (Principal Maurice de Sausmarez ARA) in 1971. The next major influences on my work were periods living in Java (where I studied Batik Painting with Ing in Yogyakarta and painted in tropical gardens with Mariette Van Bronckhurst), and in Arabia and the Gulf. I returned to Cambridge in 1994 and, since then have concentrated on watercolour landscapes of Cambridge and East Anglia, and other parts of Europe and further afield visited on holiday. For many years I also participated in life-painting classes run by James Horton RA, working in watercolours. These classes and the wealth of experience gained whilst living overseas have undoubtedly had a major influence on the style of my recent work, some of which can be seen in my Cambridge Open Studios portfolio.
