Artist's StatementI am primarily a landscape painter, I love the subtle colour changes across the fields under different light conditions. I am also particularly keen on the place of trees in the landscape. They seem to symbolise many aspects of humanity and they contribute to the wellbeing of the planet in many more ways than we do: they also often last longer than we do. While I often paint landscapes with trees I have recently enjoyed painting ‘portraits’ of particular trees.
My practice is generally to sketch in the landscape then develop the sketches in my ‘studio’, which is really my kitchen! Most of my paintings are about colour, texture and rhythm. They vary in size from small still life paintings in oil on canvas 24x18cm to larger landscapes, 80x100cm. Most landscapes are 40x50cm.
Since my teens I have drawn and painted in response to music. For five years I was Artist in Residence with the Fairhaven Singers. They invited me to attend rehearsals at which I drew in charcoal, often on long rolls of paper, responding to themes and colours in the music. The images were then developed, usually in ink and watercolour but sometimes in oils. I have always drawn at concerts and like to sit somewhere inconspicuous and draw in ink throughout. Somehow live music evokes a response more readily than recorded music.
I draw and paint because it is second nature and I enjoy it. I exhibit in local exhibitions and have exhibited with Cambridge Open Studios for 15 years.
