Artist's Statement

German born, Bettina Starke started her jewellery workshop in Cambridge in 1978, after graduating at Central St Martin’s, London.

Bettina has established a loyal customer following in Europe and America as a regular exhibitor at home and abroad.

Bettina works with platinum, high-grade gold alloys and silver, precious and semi-precious stones. She also uses buffalo horn, wood, and road aggregate. She has a particular affection for South Asia, where she sources some of her materials.

Bettina has a liking for strong, simple shapes. As far as possible, she prefers the functional part of a piece to be integral to the whole. Wearability and timelessness play an important role in her design. Bettina also works on commissions which involve refashioning customers’ own metal and stones into new designs.
