Artist's StatementWeaving and bobbin lace were early passions but in the last few years I have been inspired to explore colour and texture in patchwork and quilting. Sampling and experimenting are at the heart of my practice and I will improvise from a starting point until I achieve my vision. I would describe myself as a Modern Quilter, a trend inspired by the Quilters of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, USA. Modern Quilts are functional with many features which may include bold colours and prints, highly contrasting areas often with a lot of negative space along with improvisational piecing. Many designs are reminiscent of traditional blocks yet have a fresh look. I have a current fascination with curved piecing. I love making bags and wall art.
I love to teach in my own private garden studio or at a local adult education centre. I have a regular class on Thursday afternoons and the occasional Saturday Day School. I aslo teach at Cottenham Village College.
I can offer private tuition or patchwork & quilting, machine embroidery and bobbin lace, 1:1 or 1:2 from age 12 upwards. I am DBS checked and have Public Liability Insurance. I had a lovely card from the mother of a young girl teach textiles too. She started with me at the age of 11. “Thank you for a fantastic year. Learning about textiles has been really fun and we are really honoured that you are sharing your wisdom with us. It has also been lovely to get to know you and your warm and your and friendly personality has made Friday mornings our favourite time each week”.
I am Chair of Cambridge Quilters (CQ) and look after their social media and website: https://cambridgequilters.com I am also a member of the recently formed Cambridgeshire Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG).
I also have a blog:
https://marioncurtis.blogspot.co.uk to record my creative work. My COS portfolios are quite extensive.

Marion Curtis's Portfolios
Textiles
This portfolio has a selection of my textiles made over the past few years. Some are made as bags, throws or small embroideries on canvas. There are other times when I simply work on an idea or theme to see 'what if'.
